Nearly 25,000 Lost Electricity in Queensland and Victorian Regions Following Powerful Weather Systems

Around 25,000 households in southeastern Queensland found themselves without power on Monday's dawn after powerful weather events swept through the region, producing wind gusts topping over 100 km/h.

Substantial Frozen Precipitation and Broad Destruction

Homeowners reported large ice chunks measuring up to 7cm in particular locations. Meteorological experts confirmed that various areas across the state had been impacted by significant hail.

Utility workers were attempting to repair power throughout the affected regions, with nearly 70 crews deployed to manage the widespread outages.

Victoria's Storm Challenges

Meanwhile, around 1,000 residents in the southern state also encountered power outages after the capital city recorded its most precipitation in over 500 days.

Rescue organizations responded to 598 calls for help across the area, mainly for building damage but also for downed trees and inundation.

Hardest Hit Regions

  • The Werribee area - recorded substantial weather impact
  • Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple assistance requests
  • Wyndham - nearly 180 help reports

At one point on yesterday, in excess of 28,000 power users in Victoria were lacking electricity.

Meteorological Predictions

Moist weather were expected to linger along significant areas of Queensland's east this week as a weather pattern continued to pull in damp air against the coastal areas.

Tomorrow was expected to become the most rainy day, with ongoing storm activity anticipated across multiple regions of both regions.

Medical Alert

Public health experts cautioned that there was an increased chance of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the northern rural areas, especially given the current weather patterns.

This alert comes after previous incidents where analogous circumstances led to major medical consequences in the region.
