The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on goal, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.
